Roman tombstone of certain Terentianus

Roman tombstone of a certain Terentianus, a soldier who lived in the 1st century CE. The object was discovered in Mainz-Weisenau in western Germany. The artifact is on display at the Landesmuseum Mainz.

As we can see in the stone bas-relief, the man is holding a tablet or scroll, which emphasizes that he could read. This was undoubtedly a great advantage in the army and gave the soldier many opportunities for promotion. The soldier is also presented in typical equipment – a tunic, a cloak, sandals and a military belt with a sword and a dagger.
